Under the Never Sky Trilogy by Veronica Rossi

Book 1: Under the Never Sky

Book 2: Through the Ever Night

Book 3: Into the Still Blue

Author: Veronica Rossi

Amazon Synopsis:

Book 1: Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive. A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption.

-------

Book 2: It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

-------

Book 3: Their love and their leadership have been tested. Now it's time for Perry and Aria to unite the Dwellers and the Outsiders in one last desperate attempt to find the fabled Still Blue and bring balance to their world.

I decided that I should review these as a set, even though they all made me feel very different.  The beginning had a feel similar to the feel of The 100 tv series(which was very loosely based on a book as well).

To start off I'd like to talk about the things I enjoyed about this series.  It has a very dystopian feel to it, similar and yet different, to series like The Hunger Games and Divergent.  I've been pretty partial to the concept of Dystopian since I first read The Hunger Games, about a year before its movie release.  Similarly enough one of the lead characters is a girl named Aria.  I enjoy book series that contain female leads.  It's a sort of delicious strength I like to surround myself in.  More and more these days stories are arising where female characters are our leads.  I think it's a positive message that females are just as important as their male counterparts.

Under the Never Sky had me intrigued from the very beginning.  It had been a while since I found a novel that enticed me to read again. My rediscovery of books was rekindled with this book. New, and yet similar concepts to other dystopian novels captured me. I wanted to see what would happen further along.  It didn't take me too long to finish this. It's been a little while and I can't remember, but I think I might have gotten this as a free kindle book.

Having been taking on extra hours at work and with the looming pandemic arising, it took me a while to read this, even though I wanted  to.  I spent only a few moments every night, perhaps a chapter or two at a time, reading before bed.  It was very hard to put down and go to bed.  As soon as book 1 was completed I was hooked and I found myself buying Through the Ever Night on my kindle curious to follow Peregrine and Aria into their newfound relationship.  Even the ending of this novel had me intrigued to see what was going to happen into book 3.  I desired to know what The Still Blue had in store.

Into the Still Blue started out pretty slow.  I felt as if the first two novels were far more interesting and fast paced than this.  Some of the more exciting scenes in this novel are spread out and far too few in my opinion.  With Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night I felt butterflies and excitement coursing through my veins, this book however, left me tired and bored. The ending didn't make me feel happy or excited.  I felt uninterested while reading this and it took me longer to read than the first two books.  I felt like I was expecting something more out of the still blue, description-wise, only to be left parched in the desert.  I expected more description and something fascinating to come out of this new discovered land, but in the end there wasn't much.  For costing about the same as the first two novels combined, I was very sour and disappointed.

There are more books in this series, but this is a trilogy in of itself.  The others are stand alone types.  Maybe one day I will pick those up and read, but for now, it's time to take a break.

As a whole, I give this series 3 out of 5 pinwheels.  Id have given it more, but book three just ruined the allure of the trilogy for me.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Genre: Victorian / Classic

Author: Charles Dickens

Amazon Synopsis: In the marsh country of Victorian England, young Pip lives with his sister and her husband, the kindly blacksmith Joe, eking out a hardscrabble life. Pip’s one true aspiration is to apprentice for Joe and become a blacksmith himself, a dream that sustains him and gives him hope. But though he doesn’t know it, Pip’s fates are about to turn.

Alone in a graveyard one night, he encounters a grizzled and mud-smeared escaped convict. Dragging a heavy shackle from an injured leg, the man demands that Pip steal him food and help him remove the clanging iron. Cowed, Pip accommodates his commands without resistance. It isn’t until years later, after Pip has forged a tender relationship with the eccentric Mrs. Havisham, fallen into unexpected prosperity in London, and found himself gripped by love for the charming-yet-fickle Estella, that the true consequences of that night in the graveyard finally come to light.

Celebrated for its vibrant characters, engrossing plot, and universal themes of ambition and hope, Great Expectations stands as a pillar of Victorian literature and a preeminent entry in the Dickensian oeuvre.

I started reading this book about 5 years or so ago. Someone gave it to me as a gift. I went through a time period where no matter what I tried to read I couldn't focus. During quarantine I began to read a lot of books I'd left to the side, this was one of them.

This book is definitely a brain exerciser. It's in no way a book to read after coming back from a hiatus of books. Lucky for me I'd worked on other books and got myself right back where I needed to be to read this novel.

At times I was with the characters and not lost at all. Other times the story went on and I found no interest at all. I felt like this book could have used better descriptions of the world around, but at the same time it was as if he was determined to pull you into the characters themselves. It almost felt like reading a journal of a gentleman's life.

I've previously read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and that was and still is my favorite of his novels, but I have read only two so far.

I kind of felt a little disappointed after reading this. I guess I expected more from the era, and more from Dickens himself. I fell asleep various times while reading this, not from lack of sleep.

The best I can do is give this a 3 out of 5 pinwheels. It at least had some interesting lines every now and again that I couldn't have read anywhere else.

Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind

Genre: Adult / Fantasy

Let me just start by saying, I enjoy the writings of our late author Terry Goodkind.  He was an amazing author and may he rest in peace.

This is book six of his beloved Sword of Truth series.  Up until this book I had truly enjoyed the series.  I'm probably going to get a lot of backlash for that, because many of his fans thought this was the best of the series.  I can see why they might think so, or feel as if it was, but to me, it was completely lack luster.

As with his previous books, Terry liked to reiterate some of the things we already know about the characters, this of course caused people to be enraged over this title.  I however, was not one of them.  I don't mind a refresher, especially after having not read any of his books in quite some time.  Being reminded of past events doesn't bother me one bit.  If you sit down to read the whole series back to back, I might see why you'd be irritated by this.  I can honestly say this was not one of the reasons I disliked the book.

I started reading this book about 4, maybe 5 years back.  I was having a sort of readers block after a whole series of events happened in my life.  This is of course not to state at the time that I didn't enjoy it, I just lacked the ability and the want to read.  For some, people might say this is a red flag of lack of interest in a book.  This is not the case.

I've picked it up a few times here and there, seeing if I could rekindle that spark.  I finally found the desire to read again and sat down to finish this novel.

This novel is (in the copy I have) 785 pages long.  If you're not into long books this is definitely not the read for you.  I don't mind long reads, as long as what I'm reading is worth being read.

I felt like a majority of this novel was just empty of meaning.  It felt forced. It was as if the reason it was there was because he was trying to add extra fluff to the novel that it didn't actually need. I didn't start to enjoy this book until there were about maybe 250 pages left in the book.

Terry Goodkind sort of foreshadows what's to come by telling us who the characters are before it's time for us to know them in that light.  We already know some of the characters from previous books, but I feel like he tells us too much too soon.  I felt like I already knew what was going to happen, and indeed I did.  I sort of wanted it, but at the same time I didn't because I knew it was coming and I wasn't caught off guard or surprised in the least.  There were some surprises, but they more or less were irritations after having taken so long to get to the point.

Terry's previous novels made me excited to read.  The action and the adventure is what totally drew me into the books.  This didn't happen with this book.  He definitely focused more on the characters and who they were.  That's great, but without the allure of an amazing plot, it feels empty.

I've read various reviews, and it's either a love or a hate with this book, and I'm sort of in the middle.  I'd say it wasn't my favorite of his novels for sure, but it's also not the worst book I have ever read.  If he were still around, I'd like to ask him which of the books was his favorite, and I'll wonder for days to pass if this one was his favorite.

While reading this book I kept feeling like I was stuck in the middle and that the book would never end.  I've never felt like that about any of his books before.  This one just wasn't the one for me.  It could by itself, be a standalone.  I'd gladly have skipped this one.  Either way, I'm looking forward to reading The Pillars of Creation.

At most, I can give this one 2 out of 5 pinwheels. It was just stupendously hard for me to get through.

Shame to anyone who thinks evil of this.

During these difficult times, I know it helps to find something to do.  I've created this short little list of books that sounded interesting to me, that are currently free on Amazon kindle.  Don't have a kindle? No problem, you can get free apps on android and also on PC.  Not everyone has the money right now to enjoy a good book, so I hope this helps those of you out who are dirt broke and need a distraction.  Let your love of books guide the way.  Enjoy!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Genre: Scifi / Aliens / Romance

Whether or not you liked Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series or not, if you're into science fiction including aliens, this might be a good read for you.  This story is much better, in my opinion, than her twilight series.  If you enjoyed the movie adaptation but have yet to read the book, it's definitely time.  If you're anything like me, you usually assume the book is better than the actual movie.  However, I have cheated once or twice and watched a movie before I read the book.  If the movie ended up being good, I definitely dive into the book to make sure it's truly worth my while.

The Host takes you through the eyes of both a human girl and an alien species from off world.  It takes place on Earth, and if you're into aliens that are host requiring species, this is definitely the book for you.  I would definitely say the alien is our lead in this book.  I'm not sure how many of you have read the childhood books called Animorphs, or the Andalite Chronicles, but I can definitely say the aliens are definitely a different breed.  Before I get too deep into this, let me share with you the Goodreads synopsis.

---

Goodreads Synopsis:
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love.

Back when I was reading the Twilight series I can't tell how many years ago at this point, a friend of mine had told me to give The Host a read. I told her I felt like the Twilight series could have been better had I been a 16 year old girl reading it, and she told me I'd probably enjoy The Host far more.  I can't tell you how right she was.

Fast forward to 6 years ago when I finally picked this book up.  I was in college and didn't have a lot of time to read, so I ended up reading the first few chapters of this book with intrigue.  I just picked it up and read the rest of it recently and I was glad that I did.  In between the beginning of my read and the end, I'd watched the movie and my interest was piqued further.

Had I not been working at the time I'd probably have read this book far sooner, but alas, it brings a pandemic for me to find the time for the things I enjoy.  What a sad world we live in, when we can't even enjoy our hobbies, but I digress...

If you've seen the movie and you start reading this book you will see how true to the book they stayed.  I wouldn't say they were 100% accurate to the story, but I'd say they did a pretty damn good job of keeping with it.  Throughout this book I found myself feeling a tightness in the pit of my stomach, and sad for our lead, Wanderer.  She learns of the emotions of the human species and feels guilt for being what she is, a body snatcher in a sense.  It's almost as if she learns to become a human as well.  Human emotions are far more complicated than any species she's ever come across in all of her years as a parasitic alien.  It's as if she herself wants to be perfect, kind, loving, generous.  I absolutely fell in love with her character.  Wanderer made this story what it was, though through the interactions of other characters, the story becomes whole and complete.  I felt like the details could have been a little better as far as landscape descriptions, but it wasn't too bad.  Having watched the movie I was able to use that as a guide.  Perhaps the two go hand in hand in that sense.  This is definitely a character driven story more than anything else, and I'd never say that's a bad thing.  I enjoy character driven stories.

Pick up your own copy of The Host on Amazon if it so pleases you to do so.

So as you can guess, I give this story 5 out of 5 pinwheels.

Shame to those who think evil of this.

The Gravity Between Us

Genre: Romance / Lesbian / Fiction

First, before I get into the review, I'd like to apologize for how long it's been since I've actually done a review. Life kind of took hold of me and I find it hard to find the time to read much less do reviews of the books I read. In any case, I apologize. Onward to the review...

So far as I know, this is a standalone novel. Kristen Zimmer hasn't written anything else that I was able to find so far. It's her first and only novel to date.

The Gravity Between Us takes us through the eyes of Payton who is musically inclined, and Kendall who is an up and coming actress. The two have been friends since childhood and it soon is discovered that both have deeper feelings than just a friendship.

--

Goodreads Synopsis:
Where does friendship stop and love begin?

At just 19, Kendall Bettencourt is Hollywood’s hottest young starlet with the world at her feet – but behind the glamour and designer dresses is a girl who longs for normal.

Payton Taylor is Kendall’s best friend since childhood, and the one person who reminds her of who she really is – her refuge from the craziness of celebrity life.

With her career taking off, Kendall moves Payton to LA to help keep her sane. But Payton is hiding a secret that could make everything ten times worse. Because to her, Kendall is more than a best friend – she is the only girl that she has ever loved.

Just as they need each other more than ever, they’ll have to answer the question of where friendship stops and love begins? And find out whether the feelings they have can survive the mounting pressure of fame…

The Gravity Between Us is a daring, romantic, emotional story about friendship, love, and finding the courage to be yourself in a crazy world.

New Adult novel: recommended for 17+ due to mature themes and sexual content

I originally got this book to read with a girlfriend of mine, having been in the want of sharing books with a significant other. We read the first 80 or so pages together, before some tragic event, that I wont get into, happened and we parted ways.  Needless to say it was over a year before I picked this book up again to finally finish it. I was glad that I did, as I couldn't put the thing down for long periods of time.

The author has a way with words that just seem to draw you in.  She makes you want to know what happens in the coming chapters.  The anticipation absolutely drove me insane.  I couldn't wait to see what our author had in store for our two lovely characters.  It was easy to connect to the characters in the way that only love can lead you to anticipate.  It was an anxious yearning sort of thing, very reminiscent of past events, for me at least.  It was excellently thought out to the very end.  I do have to say though that the ending felt a bit corny, but in a very good way.  It closes the chapters up nice and tight, letting the story come to a solid conclusion.

All in all, I'd say this was one of my favorite lesbian reads, and I find that it is fair to say I believe more should pick this book up for a worthwhile read.  Even goodreads ratings prove how well this book has been written.  If you don't believe me, read it yourself and you will see how amazing it truly is.  I can't wait to see what else Kristen Zimmer has in store for us for future novels.

As you can surely guess, my rating is 5 pinwheels out of 5.
